In the comic storyline Thanos Wins by writer Donny Cates, Marvel reveals the darkest possible timeline. Thanos doesn't just snap away half the universe; he brutally slaughters the Avengers, the X-Men, Galactus, and even the Celestials. Millions of years in the future, an aging King Thanos sits on a throne forged from the bones of gods, ruling over a dead cosmos as the King of Nothing. His only remaining companions are a feral, domesticated Hulk kept on a leash and Frank Castle, who has been transformed into the insane Cosmic Ghost Rider.
But King Thanos didn't slaughter creation for power. He eradicated all life simply to win the affection of his longtime obsession, Lady Death. This is why achieving his ultimate dream was actually Thanos' ultimate defeat, and why his younger self was utterly disgusted by the victory.
